Behind the Scenes
Club Systems
The PinPoint wind solution provides real time wind speed/direction readout to screen placed in the clubhouse/pro shop showing both live data and an up to date hourly local forecast for the next 4 hours. This gives your golfers the most current wind data prior to the commencement of their round. This system is a first time golfers have had access to such accurate and comprehensive data in real time.
The wind data is provided from a small ultrasonic anemometer that is placed in ‘clear air’ on the golf course. This device is supplied with a small mast that needs to be secured in position to give accurate wind readings. The anemometer is powered through a 30m cable that needs to be connected both to internet and power. Alternatively, it is possible to power the unit and then transmit the data via Wi-Fi or using mobile networks.
The anemometer collects wind speed/direction every second and transmits each reading in real time. The data goes to our central servers before being sent straight to the displays in your club. By using this structure we can make sure that the live data is not accessible to anyone on the course, ensuring there will be no rule violations. The data can be sent to multiple screens around the club.
The display, in the clubhouse, pro shop or both, will show the real time wind speed and direction for your golfers to see, prior to their round commencing. The wind display is also enhanced with additional features. On each of the options, along with the real time wind, is a rolling 10 minute average that displays the average wind strength/direction of the last 10 minutes, together with the maximum and minimum wind speeds during that time. With this up to date data your members and visitors will be able to leave for the course with an accurate knowledge of the current conditions.
In addition to the above data two further options are available for the display screens. The first option provides up to date hourly forecasts for the next 4 hours, for your club’s specific location. The forecast offers wind speed and direction, maximum gusts, temperature, percentage chance of rain etc. These additional features offer all the information a golfer could require before heading to the course.
A second alternative option is that a display can show the wind conditions encountered during the previous 4 hours. This will allow a golfer to see how conditions changed whilst they were on the course. Each hour will show wind speed/direction and both maximum and minimum wind speeds for each hour.
Behind the live data it is possible to programme the system so that should wind speeds reach a pre-determined strength then emails are sent to key people within the club. This allows for better and accurate safety management and ensures insurers can be sure a reliable system is in place for extreme weather conditions. Moreover, all data collected is stored for up to 30 days so if information about specific wind conditions are needed, these can be accessed.
The complete system has been developed with continual feedback from both golf clubs and golfers so that key information is available prior to a round and the experience a member or visitor encounters is of the highest level.

Players Wind Guides
The PinPoint Elite Wind Guides gives you the ability to calculate the impact the wind can have on your golf ball whilst in flight. It shows you how the distance of your shot can change and takes the guess-work out of playing in difficult wind conditions. This guide has been produced using an average of top amateurs’ ball striking data. For example, ball speed, launch angle, spin etc. The maximum height of each full shot ranges from 20yds to 40yds.
The data is calculated using an average summer temperature, humidity and air pressure, all at zero altitude. These variables can affect the distance a golf ball will travel. To effectively use this guide we would recommend that you review the wind forecast ahead of time. Please be aware that tree lined holes may not only block the wind but can also funnel it, therefore, changing the expected wind direction and speed. It is also worth noting that a full shot will go between 20yds to 40yds, at this height it is likely to encounter wind speed and direction that differs to ground level.
Once you know the carry yardage you have to hit the ball, turn to that page in the guide to find the table you need. To use the table, select your wind speed (column), and wind direction (row) relative to current hole. This will indicate the box you need (example below) that contains the number you need.If the first number is a negative number (helping wind), then subtract this number from the carry yardage you wish to play and this will give you the distance this shot is playing. Likewise, if it is a positive number (hurting wind) then add this number onto the carry distance you wish to play and this is then the yardage you should select your club for.
